Team in training Week 1

29 Jan

Coach Diana with her first week hill challenge for team training

We announced that we would be posting week training and challenges to prepare you for the Run Like a Mother Half Marathon or 5K race.  A half marathon is not something you should just decide to do on a whim.  You will have less injuries and soreness if you do some level of training and preparation beforehand.

If you read my bio, I love ultra marathons, am a two-time Ironman finisher and especially get a kick out of extreme adventure.  It seems after doing more marathons than I can count, I need to go longer and have done some 50 and 100 mile ultra marathons. For this weekend, I thought I would give a jump-start on the training program… a little “challenge.”

The hill challenge

This week is a little “challenge” to get you “fired up” about the Run Like a Mother race course! That means the workout is in Lodi. Come on, when was the last time you took a little side trip for a morning or afternoon to run in a new place. Besides, you will get an early feel for the Scenic Lodi Valley.

If you can’t get every hill in one day, consider finding hills near you that you can use for the rest of the workout.

Workout

Take four different days of your choice for the week and complete the following “hill runs.”  I don’t really care what level of fitness you are at – just do what you can at whatever pace (run or walk) that you can.  You can choose to  go straight to the hill and walk/run  them or use them as your training runs.

Day 1 – McCully hill 4 times ( on the right just off Hwy 60 headed west out of Lodi)

Day 2 – Lodi Primary School Hill – 4 times (103 Pleasant Street, Lodi WI 53555). Note: avoid the 3 pm hour when school gets out as the bus and pickup traffic can make for a congested area for a while.

Day 3 – McCully hill 2 times and get over to the Primary School (Pleasant Street) and do that 2 times also

Day 4 – Start at the end of Development Drive where it intersects Cty J.  Run/walk past the golf course, past the 4 corner stop at Strangeway/Sauk street to the end where it intersect Sunrise.  You will see some apartments on the corner. If that isn’t enough for you..repeat until you can no longer go forward!

After you get done with the workout, consider posting your comments here on this blog or over on our FaceBook Page for Run Like a Mother Half Marathon.  Share with us which hill you thought was the best and any other place you visited in Lodi.   Between 8 am and noon, if you need a shower, head over to the YMCA Pool and Outreach Center at the High School. For a nominal fee, you can swim, soak in the hot tub, and get a hot shower before grabbing lunch.

Course set for Lodi Mother’s Day half marathon and 5K run

26 Jan

South view for Gibraltar Rock showcases rolling country side for the half marathon

The course has now been set for the 2011 Lodi Mother’s Day Half Marathon and 5K run.  Located in the Scenic Lodi Valley, the area sets the perfect stage for a beautiful Mother’s Day running event.

Note the “valley” location.  Perhaps we should have called the run the “Vertical Limit, Lung Buster Run”.  Ok, so blame the race director for that.

The course

The course is a very challenging run course that will greet runners with a challenging hill at the half mile point and the hills just keep on coming.

Hills are pretty much what we have here in the Scenic Lodi Valley which I guess explains why we call it that!

Stay tuned for maps and vertical elevation maps to get posted on this site. The team has made the race director go out with his GPS unit and run the course as punishment for picking the course.

What has been the hilliest course you have ever run on? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
